DISTORTED SOUL 2.0 NAMED OUTSTANDING 2004 URBAN/FUNK/HIP HOP RECORDING BY DETROIT MUSIC AWARDS
Detroit, MI: Former Nashville funk and soul artist Nadir Omowale has capped a year filled with explosive growth and recognition by capturing two of the most coveted Detroit Music Awards (DMA) in the Urban/Funk Hip-Hop category Wednesday evening, April 20 at Detroit’s historic State Theatre. “Distorted Soul 2.0” was honored as Outstanding Urban/Funk/Hip Hop Recording, and Nadir also took home the DMA for Outstanding Urban/Funk/Hip Hop Songwriter.
Most of Distorted Soul 2.0 was recorded in Nashville with producer/engineers Neal Cappellino (Dolly Parton, Victor Wooten, Allison Krauss) and R.L. Mitchell (Soulbeat Productions, Utopia State) and the album features many of the city’s finest musicians, including Iayaalis, Michael Bohannon and Musa (Tommy Smith).
Selected tracks from Distorted Soul 2.0 were featured on two compilation discs distributed during the concurrent inaugural Motor City Music Conference (MC2), one a cross-section of DMA nominees, the other a hand-picked selection of Detroit’s best local offerings produced by the Detroit Free Press for the MC2 Conference. Nadir was the only artist invited to participate in both projects.
Other honors for Nadir in 2004-05 included a finalist berth in the John Lennon International Songwriting Contest, and a Grammy Demo Panel Grand Prize for his song “Slave”, A finalist position in the Discmakers Independent Music World Series, and a warm embrace from the R&B programmers at Sirius Satellite Radio, who added three songs from Distorted Soul 2.0 to their airwaves last fall.
Nadir is a graduate of MTSU’s Recording Industry Management program and former resident of the mid-state who performed with a host of Nashville artists including Jack Johnson and former RCA recording artist Me Phi Me. He now lives in Michigan.
